Bridge now connected!
Thursday, 3 December 2009Bridge builders complete the final segment pour
The Go Between Bridge (formerly known as Hale Street Link) made history at 11:30 am
today as the final concrete segment was poured connecting the bridge across the Brisbane River.
This significant milestone was a joint celebration by both Council and the Hale Street Link Alliance, with Lord Mayor Campbell Newman visiting site to inspect the freshly-laid final segment.
Hale Street Link Alliance local stakeholders and the wider Brisbane residents have witnessed the weekly progress of this major infrastructure project and now after much anticipation the bridge decks have joined.
This bridge pour means that the communities of South Brisbane and Milton are now connected and soon enough motorists’, pedestrians and cyclists can begin to enjoy the cross river project benefits.
The final concrete segment known as a ‘stitch pour’ is an intricate process requiring detailed planning and constant surveying from both north and south spans.
Using specialist machinery known as Modular Form Travellers (MFT), the final stitch pour involves launching the MFT out between the north and south span where formwork and concrete are then placed. After top and bottom tensioning is complete the segment is connected and acts as one complete unit.
Alliance Manager Dominique Droniou said now that the bridge superstructure is complete, works will focus on other areas of the project.
“We still have a great deal works to complete such as the pedestrian pathway, north side road works, bridge services, urban design and landscaping and extensive finishing elements.”
The Hale Street Link Alliance would like to thank key local stakeholders for their ongoing support throughout construction of the main bridge superstructure.
