Project Benefits
Overall project benefits
Motorists will benefit from reduced congestion and improved travel times. An additional four traffic lanes across the Brisbane river will provide relief in the event of an accident elsewhere in the network. People who choose to continue using William Jolly Bridge will benefit from reduced congestion.
Pedestrians and cyclists will benefit from a much needed addition to their network as limited opportunities to cross the river currently exist. Generally Brisbane residents will enjoy increased accessibility to popular precincts like South Bank, Suncorp Stadium and Park Road. Businesses on both sides of the river will also benefit from increased visibility and accessibility.
Overall project benefits include:
- Important cross river link improving accessibility
- Help cater for future growth in West End and South Brisbane
- 22,100 trips or 30 per cent of cross river demand in 2021
- Improved road network legibility and reduce cross river delays
As a result of the changes to the design, impacts have been significantly reduced during construction. Delays to Coronation Drive traffic during the majority of construction are expected to be minimal (up to five minutes).
This is with the exception of a four month period from November 2009 to March 2010 when lane capacity on Coronation Drive will be reduced to allow construction of the outbound overpass. The Alliance has identified this time as a period when there will be less vehicles on the road due to the Christmas, school and university holidays. It is expected delays on Coronation Drive could be up to 50 minutes during this period.
In January 2009 the right turn lanes from Hale Street to Coronation Drive will be temporarily closed to facilitate construction work. Once the project is complete in mid 2010 one at-grade right turn lane will be reinstated.
